หลังจากเกิดเหตุเพลิงไหม้ครั้งใหญ่ที่ “ย่านสำเพ็ง” เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2449 พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงเป็นผู้วาดถนนเส้นนี้ลงบนแผนที่เพื่อปรับปรุงย่านสำเพ็งด้วยการตัดถนนและจัดระเบียบที่อยู่อาศัยใหม่ จึงเป็นที่มาของชื่อ “ถนนทรงวาด” โดยบนสองฝั่งของถนนเส้นนี้เต็มไปด้วยบ้านเรือนไม้และอาคารพาณิชย์เก่าแก่ ที่ผสมผสานระหว่างศิลปะแบบไทย ตะวันตก และจีน ในบรรยากาศคลาสสิก
After the great fire in Sampeng in 1906, King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) drew up plans for this street as a way to improve the area by cutting a new road and reorganizing its residential layout hence the name “Song Wat Road.” Lining both sides of the street are traditional wooden houses and old commercial buildings, blending Thai, Western, and Chinese architectural styles in a charming, classic atmosphere.
